Plastic Pollution Awareness Day

Partnering with GA Senator Michael Williams and Hannah4Change, the State of Georgia passed a Resolution proclaiming February 15, 2017 as Plastic Pollution Awareness Day at the State Capitol. This was the first event of its kind nationwide and was an environmental event watched by interested parties across the world. Hannah and other distinguished guests spoke to the crowd of eco-dignitaries, politicians, environmental groups, and business leaders that day at the State Capitol Building in Atlanta.

Approximately 400 people attended in person, and over 100 environmental organizations supported the event. In addition, Hannah partnered with 3 professional artists and several student artists to showcase their plastic pollution art. There were educational and artistic exhibits from these artists as well as mermaids made from plastic debris, a traveling pledge quilt, and a mini car/bike that round around the Capitol Building.  The Weather Channel, CNN and several local media outlets followed the day's events. Hannah's call to action for this event was for citizens to commit to one way they plan to reduce their plastic footprint.

Break Free from Plastic Pollution Act of 2020

Not only was Hannah one of 450 organizations that supported the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act, but she was also one of a small handful of people who spoke at the US Capitol to introduce and launch the bill – the first national bill on plastic pollution. She was joined by leaders of Plastic Pollution Coalition, Surfrider, and Algalita to speak up in support of the Break Free from Plastic Pollution Act.

The bill, co-authored by Senator Tom Udall and Representative Alan Lowenthal, is unprecedented legislation aimed at addressing the plastic pollution crisis. The bill seeks to shift responsibility for waste management to manufacturers, phases out certain single-use plastic products, and prohibits our recycled materials from being exported to developing countries. Please contact your US Congressional Representatives to tell them you support this bill.  More information can be found
